w/ Abel Jaramillo. Hypercorps, Brussels (BE). September 2018.
Nicolas de Ribou met Abel Jaramillo in July 2017 at Santander where the latter presented as part of Artsantander his project El fin de una excpedicion (The end of an expedition). His research work on the strategies that alter and subvert the usual logic of understanding certain contexts ; his interest in the cracks of History from portraits that emerge from the margins ; and his analysis of the construction of discourse and political frictions that project themselves into the everyday, immediately caught the attention of Nicolas de Ribou. When Hypercorps give him the carte blanche, he immediately thought that the context fit to invite Abel Jaramillo. This crossing of paths of three weeks, this time of encounter was exactly what he wanted to get to know him and start a first collaboration.
Abel Jaramillo has been working for several years on a long-term project, born from his reading of a film script written in the 1980’s by Felix Guattari and Robert Kramer. Un amour d’UIQ, a science-fiction film that will never be made ; but his publication under the title Un amour d’UIQ : scénario pour un film qui manque (Paris : Editions Amsterdam, 2012) presents the materialization of a popular approach to cinema in the form of a book. The impossibility of making the film and it’s written publication poses a tension between the image and the text, between the process and the result. We are in front of a failed attempt at film, but also in front of a complete work in the form of a scenario which is activated and takes shape by the text.
Starting with the script of Guattari and Kramer; the project Essay for a missing scriptof Abel Jaramillo rests on the idea of parcours, of trial and error, to confront the idea of success, of result, of fixed format: Taking the attempt as practice, as process; experimentation and link between ideas, he amplifies the limits of cinematographic format on the principle of a script for a visual attempt to extend to the heart of a mechanism of exposure, questioning the spatial possibilities and the connections, The project tries to compose a film without moving images, where the sculptural elements and objects are the actors , in the same way that the texts, installations and actions to propose the idea of a cinema that flows out of the screen and involves itself in an experience towards diffuse limits,
The first part of this project was presented from the 4th to the 18th September 2018 in the gallery Estrany – de la Mota in Barcelona under the title A script Proposal. In the context of their residency at Hypercorps, Nicolas de Ribou proposed to Abel Jaramillo a dialogue which questions this exposition. It’s about replaying, proposing there a new version, reflecting on the problems of the remake when the original material is not available The idea is to define new strategies that kick out the logic of the witness exposition to present Remake: Another Script Proposal.
The exposition was activated on the opening night by Isaline Catteau, Camille Lemille, Patxi Endara.
